On Tuesday, the Government of Panama declared a state of emergency in response to the effects of the El Niño climate phenomenon. This measure aims to expedite the necessary administrative procedures to address the consequences of the extreme weather conditions expected due to this phenomenon.

According to reports, authorities are concerned about the heavy rains and droughts already affecting the country. Moderate to severe climate changes have significant impacts on local agriculture and the economy.

Furthermore, the situation has already led to a reduction in traffic on the interoceanic canal that runs through the country, one of the world's main trade routes. The decrease in navigation is a result of adverse conditions affecting the canal's ability to operate safely at full capacity.

Panama's government authorities hope that the emergency declaration will help activate and mobilize resources more quickly, allowing for a more effective response to the impending climate changes. The goal is to minimize damage to the population and the country’s infrastructure.

The effects of El Niño typically include increased rainfall in some regions and severe droughts in others, affecting agricultural production and water supply, further exacerbating the situation for the affected citizens.

The government will also implement specific mitigation and adaptation measures aimed at protecting the population. The implementation of these actions will be monitored as long as the state of emergency is in effect to ensure effective crisis management.
