Prime Minister Bart De Wever (N-VA) will lead a trade mission to India on Thursday and Friday, marking the first visit by a Belgian government leader in twenty years. During this trip, he aims to strengthen economic relations between Belgium and India and discover new market opportunities.

The Antwerp diamond sector already has solid plans for expansion in India. Reports highlight the potential for the Port of Antwerp to benefit from the free trade agreement that the European Union signed with India earlier this year.

During his stay in India, De Wever will hold a three-hour meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. This underscores the importance of this trade mission, especially considering that Belgium is represented by a Prime Minister for the first time since 2006.

India has developed into one of the largest economies in the world and, with 1.47 billion inhabitants, represents a massive emerging market. De Wever and his delegation hope to take full advantage of this.

De Wever will also be present in Mumbai, where he will engage in discussions with diamond traders and port executives. This presents opportunities for synergy between the Belgian diamond sector and the economic interests of the Port of Antwerp.

The focus of the mission is not only on the diamond sector but also on other industries. Prime Minister De Wever’s actions may open the door to various forms of cooperation and investment. His meetings will also be followed by Belgian media.
