Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal spoke on India's robust trade relations with the United States, highlighting ongoing partnerships in defense and technology. He stated that discussions regarding the first phase of a trade agreement with the US have reached the legal drafting stage and will soon be implemented, helping India gain a competitive edge. Negotiations for this trade pact began in early 2025, aiming to resolve tariff issues and enhance market access between the two nations.

In addition to ties with the US, Goyal acknowledged that India is working on strengthening its relationship with China. He noted the importance of fair trade agreements and continuous engagement. Reports indicate that India's trade deficit with China has been a concern, prompting officials to focus on better management of trade relations.

Goyal’s comments come amid reports that India's bilateral trade with China increased by 29% in the first half of the financial year, reaching approximately $91.76 billion. Trade with the US simultaneously rose, despite a narrowing surplus. This growth in exports reflects India’s expanding trade with several countries, including Singapore and Tanzania, though some imports have decreased during the same period.

The minister also mentioned ongoing training initiatives related to semiconductor cooperation with Singapore, indicating a strategic focus on enhancing domestic capabilities and expertise in critical sectors. This approach is part of a broader effort to bolster India's economic resilience against global disruptions.

Moreover, Goyal emphasized the shift towards self-reliance during the Covid-19 pandemic when India faced challenges in obtaining essential medical supplies. This experience has shaped India’s current strategy in managing trade and partnerships, instilling a commitment to long-term economic independence.

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between India and the European Union are expected to conclude by December. Goyal announced that the FTA would likely be finalized and come into force by February or March of the following year, marking another step in India’s efforts to diversify its trade relations.
