The removal of asbestos at the former secondary school in Cascais has raised concerns within the school community, which has requested the suspension of the work that began on Monday. The National Emergency and Civil Protection Agency (ANEPC) has assured that the procedures are being conducted safely, emphasizing that there is no risk to students and staff at the new school, which was inaugurated almost a month ago.

On the other hand, the Civil Protection of Cascais also confirmed that the removal of asbestos does not pose a danger. However, this assurance comes amid concerns raised by organizations like SOS Amianto, which highlighted the need to halt the work.

SOS Amianto reiterated its call for suspension, asserting that serious irregularities were found at the site. These issues arise after Civil Protection assured the safety of the school space, generating confusion regarding the veracity of the information presented.

The contradictory statements between Civil Protection and the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) have contributed to increased tensions within the school community. The DGS has yet to officially comment on the situation, leading to distrust among parents and teaching staff regarding the safety of the operations.

Involved entities state that safety must be the priority, and ANEPC has promised to continuously monitor the removal works. The situation is beginning to generate a clamor for additional clarification regarding the methods and protocols used during the process.

Meanwhile, workers continue with the asbestos removal under the supervision of the authorities, but the community continues to demand a clear response regarding the risks and the need to suspend the works. Ongoing dialogue among all parties will be essential to address the raised concerns.
