The Public Prosecutor (MP) has accused Rui Cristina, the mayor of Albufeira from the Chega party, of discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence. The allegations arose following statements made by Cristina during a Municipal Assembly.

According to a statement issued by the Regional Prosecutor's Office of Évora, the events took place during a session in which Rui Cristina claimed he would not allocate any funds for housing to "local citizens belonging to a certain ethnicity." This assertion sparked controversy and led to judicial intervention.

The MP formally announced the charges, detailing the nature of Cristina's statements and their recording in the Assembly minutes. These claims were deemed potential incitements to hatred.

The Regional Attorney General's Office of Évora was responsible for issuing the statement, which also noted that the investigation led to a series of considerations regarding the accused's responsibility for his public statements.

While the accusations are being reviewed by the judicial system, Rui Cristina's status as mayor could be affected. Public and official reactions will be crucial in the next steps of the process.

In addition to this situation, the same edition of Observador also reported on an accident on the IC 5 in Vila Flor, which resulted in the deaths of two people, a separate event that raised concerns about road safety.
