Quercus demands impact studies for data centers in Abrantes
Quercus warns about high electricity consumption and pressure on water resources due to two new data centers in Abrantes.

The environmental organization Quercus expressed its concern on Wednesday about the construction of two data centers in the municipality of Abrantes. According to Quercus, the projects in question, by EDC ONE in Pego and Hyperion in Alvega, have the potential to consume 2.8 TWh of electricity annually.
Quercus highlighted that this consumption is nearly 19 times what is currently consumed by the municipality of Abrantes. This estimate of electricity consumption raises significant concerns about the sustainability of the municipality, which is already facing challenges related to energy supply.
In addition to the high electricity consumption, Quercus also warned about the additional pressure these projects may place on water resources in the region. Proper management of these resources is vital for environmental balance and the quality of life for local residents.

The association demands the completion of detailed environmental impact studies before the implementation of the projects. These studies are deemed essential to fully understand the consequences that the operation of the data centers may have on the surrounding environment.
Quercus made this statement in an official communiqué, emphasizing the importance of considering all environmental factors before proceeding with construction. The association's concern reflects a growing position on the need to protect the local ecosystem against large-scale projects.
The discussion about the data centers in Abrantes is a relevant topic that could affect local politics and urban development, particularly regarding sustainability and the responsible use of natural resources.
