Romania blasts rock to divert water for Cernavoda NPP
Due to low water levels in the Danube, Romania is blasting a rock to increase water supply to the Cernavoda nuclear power plant as part of measures to secure electricity supply.
Romania has taken extraordinary measures due to the extremely low water flow of the Danube, which is currently only one third of the usual summer level. To secure the water supply for the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, rock blasting in the river has begun.
These measures are being implemented against the backdrop of a call for electricity conservation in Romania as well as in Hungary and Serbia. The situation affects not only Romanians but also has repercussions for neighboring countries that are similarly impacted by the energy crisis.
