The Ministry of the Interior of Spain has formally requested the support of Frontex and Europol to conduct the triage of migrants in Ceuta. This request was made nearly a month after the border assault that led to an increase in the number of migrants arriving in the autonomous city.

In a letter addressed to Beate Gminder, Director General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska expressed the need to accelerate the classification and processing of migrants' cases in the region.

Grande-Marlaska's letter also responds to an offer made by the European Commission on August 21 to provide assistance during the migration crisis in Ceuta. The request aims to gather additional resources to manage the situation in the area more effectively.

The request includes not only Frontex but also the participation of the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) to optimize processes related to asylum and the immigration status of individuals present in Ceuta.

It is emphasized that the migration crisis in this area has generated increased political pressure, prompting the Spanish government to seek external help. The decision to request this support has been interpreted as a necessary measure to address the current situation.

The initiative represents a step towards collaboration between Spain and European institutions in the context of a growing migration challenge. The European Commission's response to this and the implementation of the requested proposals are still pending.
