The Student List secured an absolute majority in Sunday's parliamentary election. According to independent election observers, the Student List received around 52 percent of the vote, translating to at least 135 of the 250 seats in the Serbian parliament. The SNS party of former president Vučić has thus lost its long-standing dominance.

Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat even before official results were announced. He declared he would remain in the country and move into opposition. Following his party's election loss, Vučić addressed his supporters in Belgrade, acknowledging the defeat in his speech.

Voter turnout reached nearly 70 percent, the highest level since 1992 and the highest since the breakup of Yugoslavia. Celebration erupted in the streets. According to Tagesschau, jubilation broke out across many areas.

The Student List, headed by lead candidate Ilija Srđanović, stood against 14 years of Vučić's rule. The opposition list was only two years old, according to multiple sources. During that time, the SNS under Vučić, who initially served as president before holding other positions, had dominated Serbia's leadership.

According to Deutschlandfunk, the election was overshadowed by numerous irregularities, as Die Presse reports. Vučić had also stated that if his party won, he would become prime minister himself. With his party's defeat, Serbia now faces a change in power.
