A tanker has run aground off the coast of Oman, causing significant amounts of crude oil to spill into the sea. Satellite images indicate that the oil slick is already spreading over a vast area. According to information from Deutschlandfunk, environmental protection organizations like Greenpeace warn of a severe environmental disaster if the spill is not quickly contained.
The tanker, which is affected by EU sanctions, is suspected to be a target of an attack attempt. Reports from Deutsche Welle highlight that the leaking oil has reached an area equivalent to that of Lake Geneva. The situation thus poses a serious threat to the marine environment and coastal region of the Sultanate of Oman.
