During the 2026 North Central Regional Security Summit held in Makurdi, Benue State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for a move beyond rhetoric towards actionable strategies to address insecurity in the North Central geopolitical zone. He emphasized the need for practical, measurable, and sustainable solutions to the ongoing security challenges faced by the region, asserting that joint efforts from various stakeholders are crucial for effective outcomes.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also highlighted the importance of avoiding the politicization of insecurity. He warned that political disputes could create vulnerabilities that criminals might exploit, calling for unity among political leaders in the region. Sule made these remarks as part of broader discussions at the summit, aiming to foster a collaborative approach to security issues.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang joined Sule in advocating for a collective regional strategy to confront security threats. He urged a stronger emphasis on cooperation among states within the North Central region, stressing the need for community-led measures alongside governmental efforts.

In line with these sentiments, President Tinubu urged stakeholders to enhance cooperation with both security agencies and local communities to effectively tackle insecurity. He cautioned that reliance solely on military action is insufficient for achieving lasting peace, underlining the role of community engagement in security initiatives.

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was also addressed during these discussions, as leaders collectively recognized the need for a united front against insecurity in the region. The emphasis on collaboration highlights a shift towards incorporating community perspectives in tackling these challenges.

The summit marks a significant attempt to address the multifaceted security concerns affecting the North Central region, with leaders advocating for a departure from past practices in favor of integrated and community-oriented solutions.
