The number of tourist overnight stays in the Azores has been declining for the past ten consecutive months. According to reported information, in the first seven months of 2026, the archipelago recorded 2.5 million overnight stays.
This decline represents a drop of 3.7% compared to the same period last year. In contrast, tourism in Portugal as a whole grew by 1.5% during the same timeframe.
The statistics illustrate a challenging scenario for the autonomous region of the Azores regarding attracting tourists. The continuous decrease in overnight stays may signal changes in traveler preferences or specific challenges faced by the archipelago.
Sources report that while the rest of the country has seen increases, the Azores are moving away from this trend, raising questions about the underlying factors of this situation.
