The Argentine government has begun transferring prisoners from Devoto Jail to the new facility in Marcos Paz. This process is being carried out in several phases, and the first 326 inmates were moved during an intensive security operation that included armored trucks, according to reports from various media outlets.

On the first day of transfers, significant security measures were implemented to ensure the safety of the inmates and the operation as a whole. It is expected that the total number of prisoners transferred will reach 1,500 before the end of the year, when the relocation is anticipated to be fully completed.

The new facility in Marcos Paz has the capacity to house up to 2,232 individuals, according to information from the penitentiary service. This new prison, considered an improvement over the current facility, will integrate four maximum-security units.

On Monday, the second day of the operation took place, continuing the transfers of inmates from Devoto. So far, a total of 609 detainees have been moved, representing approximately 40% of the prison population from the Buenos Aires facility, which will close at the end of the year.

The operation has been the subject of legal scrutiny, as the National Penitentiary Office filed a habeas corpus challenging the compliance with certain protocols during the transfer. However, this was denied, allowing the transfer to proceed.

Additionally, a visit from Pope Leo XIV to Devoto Jail has been scheduled for November, temporarily interrupting the transfer during those days. Meanwhile, the relocation continues to progress, and the remaining inmates are expected to be transferred in the coming weeks.
