German health authorities have confirmed the deaths of two Frankfurt airport workers due to complications related to malaria, a mosquito-borne disease. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the employees were infected through mosquito bites that reportedly entered the country on a flight.

In addition to the two fatalities, four other employees at the same location have been hospitalized after contracting the disease. The RKI indicated that this case involves *Plasmodium falciparum*, the most severe form of malaria. So far, a total of six airport workers have been diagnosed with the illness.

This outbreak is significant as it marks the first time since 2023 that such an infection has been identified at an airport facility in Germany. A similar situation was recorded at the same airport in 2023, also related to mosquito infections on planes.

In response to the outbreak, traps have been set up to capture mosquitoes, and monitoring for possible infections is underway. Authorities are investigating whether the workers were infected by a single mosquito or multiple ones.

This case highlights concerns about the transportation of vector-borne diseases through air travel. While malaria is a prevalent disease in certain regions of the world, new infections in urban settings in Europe raise questions about biosafety at airports.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and coordination among different departments is crucial to prevent the spread of malaria and other infectious diseases, especially in areas with high passenger traffic like Frankfurt airport.
