Typhoon Champi kills at least one and injures hundreds in Taiwan
Typhoon Champi strikes Taiwan with at least one death and hundreds injured, leaving tens of thousands without power.

Typhoon Champi has struck Taiwan causing significant damage. Authorities report that at least one person has been killed. The number of injured has grown as the disaster unfolded. Various sources reported different figures: early reports cited 94 injured, later reports 171, and eventually at least 350 to 500 injured.
The victim was a man who was on a beach. According to authorities, he was swept away by high waves generated by the typhoon. Emergency services found him later, but he had already died. One source reported that the waves reached approximately 21 metres high.
Many of the injured were hurt in traffic accidents. Some sources mention that at least 30 people were injured in traffic incidents, while other reports speak of numerous traffic casualties without specifying a number.

The typhoon also caused extensive power outages. Approximately 56,000 households were without electricity on Saturday following Champi's passage. Public life in Taiwan was largely shut down as a precaution, and numerous flights were cancelled.
Typhoon Champi is described by sources as a supertyphoon, a hurricane of the most severe category. After passing Taiwan, the storm moved towards China and Japan. Southern Japan also lay in the path of the typhoon.
The casualty toll could not be uniformly determined across all sources, reflecting the ongoing impact of the disaster across different regions and continuing reports of damage as the event unfolded.
