Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Chapi over the weekend, with the storm intensifying between Friday and Saturday. The passage of the weather system caused at least one death and injuries to hundreds of people, according to various reports.

One person was swept away by waves on a beach in Pingtung district, according to the Observador. Injuries were caused by motorcycle crashes, traffic accidents, and by the storm's waves and winds. Sources differ on the exact number of injured: the Observador reports 163 injured, while Notícias ao Minuto mentions 171, and UOL indicates more than 500.

Wind gusts reached speeds of up to 191 kilometres per hour. The typhoon also caused trees to fall and power cuts across the island.

Anticipating the storm's arrival, Taiwan cancelled military exercises. Air transport was particularly affected, with reports of around 125 flight cancellations on the 22nd, while other sources cite nearly one thousand flights cancelled during the period of the system's approach and passage.

After striking Taiwan, Typhoon Chapi moved towards Japan, raising new concerns about the impacts of the weather system in that region.

Taiwanese authorities prepared for the impact with several preventive measures before the storm arrived, demonstrating the scale of the threat posed by the weather phenomenon.
