On August 19, U.S. Armed Forces announced the death of four individuals in an attack on a vessel in the Caribbean, which, according to Southern Command, was involved in drug trafficking activities. The attack was part of a military operation in the region, dubbed 'Southern Spear'.

According to reports from Southern Command, it was a speedboat operating on established drug smuggling routes. Authorities stated that the individuals eliminated during the operation were considered 'narcoterrorists'.

This attack is part of a broader U.S. effort to intensify the fight against drug trafficking in Latin America, a repeated action under the current administration. In recent years, over 200 deaths have been reported in similar operations since these attacks began in September 2025.

The U.S. military stated that intelligence services had confirmed the vessel's active involvement in drug trafficking, although no specific evidence validating this claim was presented.

The operation has faced criticism due to allegations of possible unlawful killings, as evidence of connections to drug trafficking has not been publicly demonstrated. Throughout these maritime attacks, it has been documented that at least 231 people have died in Latin America in related strikes since these campaigns began.

The context of the attack highlights the tensions in the fight against drug trafficking in the region, as well as the implications of the involvement of U.S. military forces in operations outside their territory.
