Today, on August 24, Ukraine celebrates the 35th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union. The festivities are taking place against the backdrop of the Russian invasion that has been ongoing since February 2022. Numerous international guests are expected in Kyiv, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and EU Council President António Costa. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed several heads of state and government on Sunday, who are participating in the celebrations.

In addition to the main celebrations in Kyiv, events are also taking place in other European cities for this occasion. Hundreds of people have gathered in Lisbon to celebrate Ukraine's independence. The demonstration, which includes both Ukrainian and Portuguese citizens, started at Parque Eduardo VII and proceeded to Praça do Comércio. This gathering demonstrates support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

The celebrations in Kyiv feature various events that emphasize both independence and resistance against aggression. Organizers have prepared a program that includes both cultural and political aspects. The Ukrainian flag is being raised in several cities, including abroad, to show solidarity.

Ukraine's independence was declared on August 24, 1991, with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the then Supreme Council. Today’s anniversary evokes memories of the country's development since those historic moments and the challenges it has faced in recent years.

The events in Kyiv and Lisbon are part of a broader initiative aimed at raising awareness of the situation in Ukraine. The country is not only facing a military conflict but also the need to mobilize international support for its political and humanitarian concerns.

In today’s context, attention is directed not only toward the celebrations but also toward a strong appeal to the international community to support Ukraine in its quest for peace and stability. The anniversary serves as a moment of reflection on the past 35 years and the challenges ahead.
