Ukrainian Prisoners Report Torture and Sexual Abuse in Russian Detention

Ukrainian prisoners of war have reported severe mistreatment while in Russian detention, with over 95% claiming to have experienced torture, according to a United Nations report. The UN monitoring indicates that the ill-treatment of Ukrainian detainees is both widespread and systematic, as reported by multiple sources including The Independent and Rappler.

UN official Claudia Fuentes Julio stated that many of the interviewed prisoners recounted experiences of electric shocks and sexual abuse. More than half of those interviewed indicated that they had been subjected to sexual violence during their captivity, highlighting the severity of the conditions they faced.

The claims underscore ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of prisoners by the Russian authorities, with reports from various sources confirming a pattern of abuse against both military and civilian detainees.
