The Regional Council of Veneto has approved the popular initiative law on end-of-life matters, becoming the fourth Italian region to introduce such regulation, following Tuscany, Sardinia, and Emilia-Romagna. This law establishes the procedures and timelines for healthcare assistance in medically-assisted suicide.

The measure received 32 votes in favor, while 5 council members abstained and 14 voted against. This approval marks a significant step in the Italian legislative landscape concerning end-of-life issues.

According to reports, the regional president, Luca Zaia, described this decision as a "necessary response" to inquiries received in Veneto since 2019, of which only two had positive outcomes.

The law thus represents a turning point for regions governed by the center-right, making Veneto the first to officially adopt this measure.
