The woman was attacked on Saturday while working in the enclosure of two male Persian panthers. She sustained severe injuries to her head and neck and was rushed to hospital. The zoo announced on Tuesday that she had succumbed to her injuries.

According to the safari park, the caretaker started working there at age seventeen. She worked there, with breaks, for nearly forty years, spending eight of those years caring for the panthers. The zoo stated in a declaration, made in consultation with her family, that she had "a big heart for the animals."

According to several news sources, the woman was Dutch but lived in Flanders. Further details about the exact circumstances of the attack were not disclosed.
