Abhinandan Varthaman, a former Indian Air Force Group Captain, retired from the IAF on March 31, 2024. He is known for his role in a 2019 incident where he shot down a Pakistani F-16 during armed conflict following the Balakot airstrikes.

Following his retirement, Varthaman has joined FLY91, a newly established regional airline that commenced operations in March 2024. FLY91 currently operates a fleet of six ATR 72-600 aircraft from its bases in Goa and Hyderabad.

In recognition of his bravery, Varthaman was awarded the Vir Chakra, India's third-highest wartime gallantry award, for his exceptional performance during the dogfight that led to the downing of the Pakistani jet.
