As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has formed a campaign council to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially opened the electioneering season, allowing political parties to organize for the upcoming contest.

President Tinubu will chair the campaign council, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda serving as vice chairmen. This structure has raised eyebrows, particularly concerning the absence of several experienced campaigners who have not been included in this key political initiative.

Former South-East spokesman of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Denge Josef Onoh, has publicly criticized the council's composition. He urged President Tinubu to review the list of members, expressing concerns about inclusivity and effectiveness in the upcoming elections. Onoh's remarks signal discontent within party ranks over the current selection.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has made a separate call, urging Defence Ministers General Christopher Musa and Senator Bello Mohammed Matawalle to withdraw from the campaign council. HURIWA asserts that both ministers should focus on addressing the country's increasing insecurity rather than participating in political campaigning.

Concerns have also been raised by members of the House of Representatives regarding potential conflicts of interest involving the campaign council. Lawmakers highlighted the roles of certain individuals, including the Ministers of Defence and Minister of State for Defence, alongside Nigeria Revenue Service chairman Zacch Adedeji and Budget Office Director-General Tanimu Yakubu, as areas of concern that could undermine the integrity of the council.

This formation of the APC campaign council is critical as the party aims to solidify its position ahead of the elections, yet it finds itself contending with internal dissent and external criticisms that may impact its strategies moving forward.
