Catarina Martins, a Member of the European Parliament from the Left Bloc, recently visited the student republics Marias do Loureiro and Baco in Coimbra. During her visit, Martins emphasized the importance of this type of student housing, which has a centuries-old tradition in the city.

The MEP expressed her intention to urge both national and European authorities to ensure support for the republics. The main concern is to prevent their closure, which could lead to a significant loss of student culture in Coimbra.

Martins stressed that the republics are essential for fostering camaraderie and forming bonds among students, in addition to being a symbol of local academic life. She noted that preserving these institutions is a matter of cultural identity.

The visit comes at a critical time for the republics, which are facing various challenges that could threaten their sustainability. The MEP committed to bringing the issue before the European Parliament, seeking solutions to support these communities.
