On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, ceremonies and commemorative events are taking place across the United States and in other locations including London. These observances recall the nearly 3,000 lives lost when hijackers crashed planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

In New York City, emotions are heightened by recent discussions about the actions of city leaders during the attacks, as revealed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The city's remembrance events are expected to reflect on both the collective mourning and the ongoing impact of the attacks.

In a separate event at the Pentagon, President Trump is set to deliver remarks honoring the 184 individuals who lost their lives there when American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the building. Trump’s speech is anticipated to address both the attacks and the broader context of global terrorism.

In addition to the formal gatherings, a seventh moment of silence will be observed this year, commemorating those who have died from illnesses related to the toxic dust from the attacks. This marks a significant addition to the traditional moments of silence held during the commemoration.

As families, friends, and first responders gather to reflect, the anniversary is not only a tribute to those who died but also a time for individual and communal remembrance of shared loss and grief.

These events point to the enduring legacy of September 11, as many continue to wrestle with the emotional and historical implications of that day, two and a half decades later.
