Dieter (64) completes his 37th Dodentocht in wheelchair after ALS diagnosis

Dieter Van Meensel, 64 years old, completed his 37th participation in the 100KM Dodentocht on Saturday, despite his recent diagnosis of bulbar ALS. The emotional event took place at Cardijnplein in Bornem, where his family pushed him in a wheelchair to the finish line.

In March, Dieter bought a ticket for the Dodentocht, unaware that he would receive a diagnosis just a month later. Once the serious condition was diagnosed, he could no longer cover the entire distance independently.

Dieter's family played a crucial role during the last five kilometers of his journey. They supported him, enabling him to reach the finish line, which led to an overwhelming applause from the audience.

At the finish, the emotion was palpable. Participation in the Dodentocht, which had been such an important part of his life, was now accompanied by the challenges posed by the disease.

He personally views this year's participation as special, expressing that the Dodentocht will remain 'forever' significant for him. This event has not only impacted him but also his family and friends who supported him.
