In Palermo, ten tests have returned positive among the family and friends of Anna Rosa, the four-year-old girl who died from diphtheria. All positive individuals are asymptomatic as they have received at least their first vaccination. The Provincial Health Authority (ASP) has initiated antibiotic prophylaxis and mandated isolation for these individuals.

According to reports, the search for the patient zero is underway. It is suspected that the infection may be linked to a relative returning from a trip abroad. However, no new cases of diphtheria have been reported in the area since the death of the unvaccinated child.

The General Director of the ASP in Palermo has confirmed that all procedures outlined in the protocols have been initiated, including an epidemiological investigation, contact identification, and monitoring. This was highlighted in a report by Sky TG24.

The Italian National Institute of Health has confirmed the positivity of a sample taken from the deceased child, thereby confirming the diagnosis of diphtheria. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation.

Following the incident, there has been an increase in demand for vaccines in the region. New doses have been made available in Palermo, and vaccination centers without the need for appointments have been opened in Catania.

Currently, the only genuine case among direct contacts is a four-year-old cousin, who is also vaccinated, has tested positive but presents mild symptoms and is hospitalized in stable condition. Tracking and monitoring of at-risk individuals continue.
