In Siberia, an increasing amount of methane gas is being released from the permafrost, the permanently frozen ground. According to scientific research published in the journal Science, summer methane emissions have doubled between 2010 and 2023.

The primary cause of this increase is the thawing of permafrost due to global warming. This process leads to higher methane emissions, a greenhouse gas more potent than CO2, which in turn contributes to further warming.

Methane plays a significant role in climate change and can exacerbate the effects of CO2. This makes measuring the exact emissions a challenge, as conditions in Siberia are complex.

The difficulties in measuring these methane leaks arise from the changing and difficult-to-access nature of the permafrost, presenting new challenges for scientists in their research on climate change.
