Lilian Smart, an eight-year-old girl, died after contracting a rare infection caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba, known as the 'brain-eating amoeba,' while swimming at Lake Claiborne in Louisiana. According to reports, the child was hospitalized on August 15 and passed away the following day, one day after her birthday, due to primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a condition that has a mortality rate exceeding 97%.

Health authorities have described Naegleria fowleri as a single-celled organism that thrives in freshwater bodies, such as lakes and rivers, in the United States. The infection occurs when the amoeba enters the body through the nose and can lead to inflammation of the brain and infections in the central nervous system.

This case is particularly rare, with fewer than ten occurrences reported annually in the U.S. The infection is almost always fatal and most cases are linked to exposure to warm waters, like lakes during the summer. So far, there have been no reported infections caused by Naegleria fowleri in Portugal. Lilian's death has raised alarm and concern in various communities about the potential dangers present in freshwater bodies.

Reports indicate that local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Lilian's death and the response from health services, as this situation raises questions about safety when swimming in lakes and similar bodies of water.

According to information, environmental conditions, such as water temperature, play a crucial role in the proliferation of the amoeba. With rising temperatures in the summer, monitoring recreational water areas becomes critical to prevent such infections.

This tragic incident underscores the need for public awareness regarding the risks associated with swimming in freshwater, particularly in regions where Naegleria fowleri may be present. The tragedy involving Lilian Smart, therefore, serves as a reminder for parents and caregivers about safety in aquatic activities.
