On Monday, the foreign ministers of the European Union agreed on an extensive sanctions package against supporters of Russia in Luxembourg. According to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the package affects around 1,600 individuals, companies, and organizations that support Russia's war machinery in any way.

The meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg aims to strengthen a common European stance regarding sanctions. These sanctions are part of the EU's efforts to increase pressure on Russia while simultaneously seeking to end the war in Ukraine.

Austria is represented by State Secretary Josef Schellhorn (NEOS). The Austrian government has repeatedly advocated for unity within the EU regarding its measures against Russia in the past.

The goal of the new sanctions is to deprive the affected actors of the financial resources necessary to support military activities in Ukraine. This will be achieved through stringent measures, such as freezing assets and imposing travel restrictions.

With these measures, the EU also aims to make it clear to other Russian actors involved in the conflict that their actions will not go unpunished. Numerous organizations and companies had already been sanctioned previously due to their connections to Russia.

The exact details of the sanctions, particularly the names of the affected individuals and organizations, are likely to be published in the coming days to officially implement the measures.
