Fachin removes Moraes from leading the fake news investigation
The president of the Federal Supreme Court, Edson Fachin, has removed Alexandre de Moraes from the fake news inquiry and suspended decisions regarding the leadership of the Federal Police.

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Edson Fachin, has decided to remove Minister Alexandre de Moraes from leading the fake news investigation. This measure was announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and represents a significant change in the management of an investigation that has been active since 2019.
Additionally, Fachin suspended conflicting decisions made by Ministers André Mendonça and Flávio Dino regarding the leadership of the Federal Police (PF). As a result, Andrei Rodrigues will remain in the position of general director of the agency, thus ensuring some stabilization in the leadership of the PF.
The fake news inquiry was initiated by the STF to investigate attacks and the dissemination of false news affecting the Court. Over the years, this inquiry has undergone various changes and sparked controversies both inside and outside the court, accumulating decisions that have expanded its scope.

Moraes has been the rapporteur of this inquiry since its opening. With the transfer of the investigations to Fachin, there is anticipation regarding how this could influence the direction of the inquiry, which has already lasted seven years.
The recent decisions come amid tensions between members of the STF, with the issue of the leadership of the PF and the management of the fake news inquiry being central points in this dispute. Fachin mentioned that his actions aim to establish legal certainty and institutional delimitation.
In response to Fachin's decisions, Minister Alexandre de Moraes announced that he would hold a press conference. The date and time for the announcement have been previously scheduled, but details regarding its content have not yet been disclosed. There is an expectation that Moraes will discuss the implications of the fake news inquiry and the current situation at the STF.
