German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visits Kyiv in support of Ukraine
Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit, promising a significant military aid package as Russia intensifies attacks.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, October 4, for a surprise visit aimed at demonstrating Germany's support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. During his stay, Merz met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and stated that Ukraine continues to need all the support from the international community.
Merz announced a commitment to military assistance, which includes the delivery of interception drones and long-range weapons. The chancellor asserted that if Russia is not contained, its war machine would ultimately turn against European countries, a statement that underscored the urgency of support for Kyiv.
The visit came at a critical time as Ukraine faces an increase in Russian attacks. While Merz was in Kyiv, air raid sirens were sounded in the city, which was under threat from Russian airstrikes, highlighting the precariousness of security in the capital.

Sources reported that during his visit, a Russian drone struck a key bridge on the Dnipro River in Kyiv. This attack is part of a series of offensives targeting infrastructure in the city, further emphasizing the existing tension in the war scenario.
In addition to military assistance, Merz also commented on repairs to infrastructure and the joint production of drones between Germany and Ukraine. The aid package is expected to include around one billion euros allocated for defense initiatives and 350 million euros designated for energy repairs.
Merz's visit occurs in a context where Russia had issued warnings about traveling to Ukraine, raising security concerns. Despite the risks, the visit is seen as an important sign of Germany's solidarity with Ukraine. Other German government officials were present, including Minister of Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche, demonstrating institutional support for this initiative.
