Germany selects Munich as candidate for Olympic Summer Games
The Bavarian capital Munich will represent Germany's bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games from 2036.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has chosen Munich as Germany's candidate to host the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games starting in 2036. This decision was made during an extraordinary members' meeting of the DOSB, where the Bavarian location competed against Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr.
Munich triumphed with 91 votes to 50 against Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr. This decision is portrayed by various media as a clear victory for the Bavarian capital, reinforcing its ambitions to host the games.
The aim for the Olympic bid is to pursue the games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. The decision is seen as a significant milestone for the future direction of sports in Germany, although the political and sporting framework conditions remain unclear.

However, the announcement of the decision resulted in a minor mishap. DOSB President Thomas Weikert apparently was unaware during the announcement that the decision had already been known in the hall before Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier could make the official declaration.
In the week prior, there had been bottlenecks in the competition for the candidate, with a very close contest between the two cities Munich and Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr. However, the outcome of the vote indicates that the final result was more decisive than previously expected.
Munich has a historical connection to the Olympic Games, having previously hosted them in 1972. Whether the bid will ultimately be successful is likely to depend on various factors that are still only vaguely known.
