India Increases Glacier Monitoring Following Nepal Disaster
The US Geological Survey indicated that a glacial collapse led to severe flooding in Nepal, resulting in over 600 fatalities and thousands missing.

In the wake of a disaster at the Tibet-Nepal border, India is enhancing its glacier monitoring efforts. According to the US Geological Survey, the incident was triggered by a glacial collapse that unleashed a significant torrent of debris.
The floods are reported to have left nearly 3,000 individuals missing, with 633 confirmed deaths. This has prompted a response from authorities in Uttarakhand, India, to increase vigilance around glacial activity in the region.

As concerns mount over the impacts of climate change, scientists have warned that glaciers in the Himalayas are melting at an accelerated rate, posing risks to nearby communities and increasing the likelihood of similar disasters in the future.
In addition to the human toll, bodies from the disaster have washed up in neighboring India, reaching as far as 250 miles downstream. Nepal's Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, has cautioned that the recovering bodies are vulnerable to rapid decomposition due to high temperatures.
