Italy: Meloni pushes controversial electoral reform through Parliament
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni secured a majority for her electoral reform in the Chamber of Deputies, but the final vote is still pending.

The Italian Chamber of Deputies expressed its confidence in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government during several votes of confidence regarding her controversial electoral reform. In the first vote, the bill concerning Article 1 received 226 votes in favor, while 147 deputies opposed it and three abstained.
This was followed by a second vote of confidence, which also saw Article 2 of the bill approved by a significant majority. Meloni emerged strengthened from these votes, securing a solid foundation for her reform policies.
The third and final vote of confidence regarding Article 3 also took place on Wednesday and was likewise decided positively. These votes were crucial not only for the electoral reform but also for Meloni's political future in the Italian Parliament.

Having overcome these three hurdles, the decisive final vote on the entire electoral reform now awaits, scheduled for Thursday. This represents the final phase in the legislative process.
The reform itself is controversial and elicits mixed reactions within Parliament. Various political groups have expressed concerns and criticized the potential impacts, while the government strives to solidify its position.
In the last vote, deputies from the South Tyrolean People's Party also supported the reform, highlighting backing beyond Meloni's own coalition. The government hopes to create a new framework for the Senate elections through this reform.
