Italy to Maintain Border Controls with Spain for the Time Being
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced that the border controls with Spain will be reviewed by Saturday at the latest.
Italy has decided to maintain the temporarily introduced border controls with Spain for the time being. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi stated on Thursday afternoon in the parliamentary Schengen Committee that a review of the decision will take place at the earliest on Saturday.
The border controls were implemented on August 1 to address potential security risks arising from the arrival of several thousand migrants in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. Piantedosi emphasized that the lifting of the controls will only be possible if all security risks for Italy can be fully eliminated.
