Kolkata Durga Puja Stampede Claims 19 Lives and Leaves Many Injured
A stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries amid heavy crowds and rain on Saturday evening.

A tragic stampede occurred on Saturday evening at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 individuals and injuring around 25 others. The incident reportedly took place during a surge in crowd numbers amid heavy rain, which led to chaotic conditions.
According to reports, emergency services transported the injured to various hospitals, including Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, for immediate medical attention. Eyewitnesses indicated that inadequate police presence contributed to the situation's escalation, with many claiming that law enforcement was primarily stationed at the VIP entrance rather than managing the crowd effectively.
In response to the tragedy, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the victims in the hospital and subsequently canceled his scheduled programs in Kolkata. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased and pledged government jobs to their kin.

The West Bengal government has established a special investigation team (SIT) headed by a sitting judge to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede. The SIT will focus on potential security lapses and lapses in crowd management at the event.
Political reactions have followed, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleging maladministration regarding the crowd control measures in place during the Puja festivities. TMC leaders expressed their shock and grief over the incident.
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at large public gatherings, especially during significant cultural events like Durga Puja, where crowd management is critical. Local residents have called for improved measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
