The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, has made new claims regarding the Falkland Islands, threatening to sanction oil companies operating in the region. In recent statements, Milei expressed that he perceives 'winds of change' favorable to Argentina regarding the archipelago, especially after comments from former US President Donald Trump about the islands' situation.

In response, the British government reaffirmed on Friday (4th) that the Falkland Islands are British territory. The UK's Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, stated that the overwhelming majority of the local population wishes to continue being British.

Additionally, the UK Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, reiterated that British sovereignty over the Falklands is 'unyielding.' He highlighted that the residents of the islands have chosen this identity and that their self-determination must be respected.

The British government has downplayed Milei's threats, emphasizing that the UK's commitment to the defense of the Falklands is solid and will not be altered by provocations.

The situation in the Falklands has been gaining international attention, particularly with the increasing tension between Argentina and the UK. Milei's statements reflect a nationalist stance that has characterized his administration since taking office.

This episode marks a continuation of the historical disputes between the two countries over the sovereignty of the Falklands, with the UK reinforcing its position in light of the Argentine president's new declarations.
