Myanmar's president Min Aung Hlaing has arrived in Malaysia for a visit scheduled to last two days. This trip marks his first official visit since the country’s military coup in 2021. According to various reports, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that the discussions will focus on solutions to the refugee issue, particularly the repatriation of Myanmar nationals living in Malaysia.

Anwar stated that during Hlaing's visit, he, the foreign minister, and the home minister would address these matters. The discussions come as Malaysia plans to return approximately 5,000 Myanmar nationals who have reportedly agreed to a voluntary return. The initiative has sparked warnings from human rights groups regarding the potential repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

Recent reports indicate that nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals have already returned to Myanmar on Sunday, following an agreement between the two countries. The timing of Hlaing's visit coincides with this ongoing repatriation process, leading to concerns about the implications for displaced populations in Malaysia.

Aspects of this visit reflect a broader trend among ASEAN nations seeking to engage diplomatically with Myanmar following the coup. There is an evolving dynamic as multiple ASEAN members increase their bilateral engagement with Myanmar, which may influence regional stability and humanitarian conditions.

Critics have raised concerns about the treatment of repatriated Myanmar nationals, questioning the safety and rights of those being sent back. Despite these criticisms, Malaysia's government remains focused on finding solutions through dialogue with Myanmar's leadership.

This visit by Hlaing is also significant as it marks a continuation of the attempts to mend ties between Malaysia and Myanmar, which have been strained since the military takeover. Observers are watching closely how these discussions will unfold and what agreements, if any, will emerge.
