According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), nine people in the Netherlands have been infected with the West Nile virus this year. These figures were announced on Thursday. Last week, the number stood at three infections, indicating a significant increase.

The infected individuals all contracted the virus within the Netherlands. The infections have been identified in the provinces of Utrecht, North Brabant, North Holland, and South Holland.

One of the infected patients has died. This case involves an individual from the province of Utrecht, who was over 75 years old and had an underlying health condition. This detail underscores the severity of the virus, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The RIVM has not disclosed specific information regarding the source of the virus transmission but emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance.

According to the RIVM, the likelihood of contracting West Nile fever in the Netherlands remains relatively low, though the number of infections this year has significantly increased compared to previous years.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to be alert for symptoms of the virus.
