Oil prices have seen a significant drop in response to expectations surrounding an imminent announcement of new economic sanctions by the United States against Iran. At 03:29 GMT, Brent futures fell by $1.23, or 1.3%, reaching $93.16 per barrel. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped $1.36, or 1.6%, settling at $85.70.

In the meantime, former President Donald Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social that "Iran is collapsing completely." This comment came just before a package of sanctions expected to be aggressive towards the Iranian regime was announced.

This follows statements by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who stated that the economic war against Iran is "in its final phase." He also mentioned that preparations are underway for the "largest financial offensive ever orchestrated."

Previous sanctions have been part of a broader effort to pressure Tehran regarding its nuclear program and activities in the region. The new measures are considered in a context of increasing political and military tension.

Oil futures tend to react to geopolitical variables, and Trump’s comments along with messages regarding sanctions may influence market perceptions.

The official announcement in Washington is expected to be closely monitored by analysts and market players, as it could have a significant impact on oil prices and the global economy.
