OpenAI launches a version of ChatGPT for teens with safeguards

OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT specifically aimed at teenagers, incorporating enhanced security measures for users aged 13 to 17.

OpenAI began deploying a version of ChatGPT for teenagers on August 18, targeting users aged 13 to 17. This initiative follows a complaint filed a year ago, accusing the chatbot of contributing to a teenager's suicide in the United States.

This new version of ChatGPT includes enhanced safeguards, designed to protect teens while not restricting their access to the tool. A set of parameters will be automatically activated if OpenAI determines that a user is a minor.

The restrictions specifically address sensitive content, aiming to shield young users from the dangers associated with AI usage. The teen version also incorporates an educational mode, providing a more suitable framework for this age group.

The rollout of this version comes at a time when regulations surrounding artificial intelligence are tightening, in response to concerns about the safety of young users. In North America, OpenAI faces 18 complaints highlighting worries about the negative effects of its chatbot on young people's mental health.

While seeking to balance safety and accessibility, OpenAI emphasizes significant improvements in protecting teenage users, striving to meet the criticisms and expectations of parents and institutions.
