Over 2,000 Yemenis Flee to Djibouti Amid Intensified Fighting
Thousands have escaped Yemen this week due to increased clashes between Houthi fighters and government forces, according to reports.
The United Nations has reported that more than 2,000 individuals have reached Djibouti this week, fleeing conflict in Yemen. This exodus is attributed to a week-long offensive by the Houthi militia against government forces, which has escalated fighting in the region.
The Houthis' recent military advances have resulted in their control over the rest of Yemen's Red Sea coast and several strategic islands. This has included the capture of the port city of Mokha, which occurred on Thursday during the offensive, consolidating the group's hold on crucial maritime routes, particularly the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Djibouti's minister of economy and finance noted that about 1,400 people sought refuge in Djibouti by Saturday, highlighting the growing impact of the conflict on civilian populations. Reports indicate that tens of thousands have been displaced in response to the ongoing violence.
The situation in Yemen has been characterized by the Houthis gaining ground, especially in northern regions such as Sanaa and Hodeida, while clashing with the internationally recognized government. The intensity of the conflict has prompted alarm among neighboring countries regarding security and humanitarian ramifications.
Simultaneously, the regional tensions have also resulted in security alerts being issued in Saudi Arabia in response to Houthi missile and drone attacks. Thirteen civilians were reported injured due to strikes on various cities on Monday, drawing condemnation from Saudi officials and reinforcing security alerts in multiple areas.
The latest developments reflect a marked increase in Houthi operations against both domestic and regional adversaries, leading to widespread displacement and heightened security concerns across the region.
