On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project. The event was marked by a ride shared with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on the newly launched metro services. The inauguration is a significant milestone in the Chennai Metro development, which has seen ongoing work for six years since its initiation.

The newly inaugurated stretch is part of a broader array of development projects valued at ₹13,000 crore, which Modi launched during his visit. According to reports, daily operations for the metro services will commence on October 12, 2026, with trains expected to run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Initially, there will be 15 trains operating between Poonamallee and Vadapalani, providing a train every 10 minutes during peak hours, as noted in reports. The design of this portion of the metro includes an innovative double-decker structure spanning 3.7 kilometers, reflecting modern engineering practices.

In a video broadcasted, Modi and CM Vijay were observed taking a short ride on the metro from Porur Bypass Station to Poonamallee Bypass Station and back, signifying the official commencement of the passenger services for this segment. This moment highlights the collaboration between the central and state governments in advancing urban transportation.

Following the inauguration, political reactions emerged from various parties. The opposition DMK claimed that the project was partly a result of efforts initiated under the previous leadership of former Chief Minister MK Stalin. Meanwhile, the AIADMK emphasized its role in the project’s development, asserting its historical contributions to Chennai's infrastructure.

Modi also referenced interactions with past leaders in Tamil Nadu during his speech, suggesting that the continuity and improvement of transport facilities in the state are essential for future growth. His remarks, however, come against the backdrop of ongoing debates about the roles of various administrations in the project's progression.
