The Tamil Nadu government has officially dropped the proposed Parandur airport project, as announced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. This decision comes amid widespread protests from local residents against the airport development.

Instead of proceeding with the Parandur project, the government will focus on expanding Chennai airport. The planned expansion includes the construction of a new Terminal 5, which is expected to accommodate an additional twenty million passengers annually.

Chief Minister Vijay expressed his support for the protesters, stating, "I stand firm with the protesters against the proposed airport," emphasizing his alignment with community opposition.

In light of the cancellation, alternative sites for a new airport have been identified and will be proposed soon, according to reports. The government aims to select a location that faces no opposition from the public.

Additionally, the fareless travel scheme for women will be expanded to all government buses, a move that complements the focus on improving transportation infrastructure in the state.
