Police action in Porto sparks diverse reactions and questions
The police intervention at Praça D. João I in Porto following a protest raises debates about its proportionality.

Praça D. João I in Porto woke up empty after a heavy police crackdown on demonstrators, resulting in injuries. The intervention raised questions about its nature and necessity, prompting various political parties to seek clarifications from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).
Both the Left Bloc (BE) and the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) were among the political groups that questioned the MAI's handling of the police intervention, deeming it "disproportionate." The criticisms were amplified by several political figures who called for a broader debate on the appropriateness of police force in protest situations.
Pedro Abrunhosa, a musician and activist, expressed his condemnation of the police action, urging for dialogue between authorities and demonstrators. Abrunhosa, along with other artists, showed solidarity with those who were protesting, reflecting a wave of support within civil society on this issue.

Lawyer Ana Rita Duarte Campos emphasized that the use of force by the police must adhere to criteria of proportionality. She warned that any excessive use of force could lead to criminal and administrative proceedings against the officers involved in the police operation.
The police actions were defended by some political leaders, including Luís Montenegro and the mayor of Porto, who deemed the intervention "correct" under the circumstances in which it occurred. In contrast, the President of the Republic expressed understanding for the motivations behind the protests while cautioning both citizens and politicians about the importance of public order.
The current situation may lead to new legislative debates regarding police actions, as opposition to the police crackdown grows. Several parties have expressed their intention to investigate the events and the manner in which force was used, while the issue remains a polarizing topic in the national political landscape.
