The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, advocated today for the formation of a strategic partnership with Australia. According to Ramos-Horta, this partnership would aim at sharing responsibilities and reducing costs associated with patrolling, monitoring, and controlling maritime security.

Ramos-Horta highlighted that maritime security is an increasing concern for Timor-Leste, especially in the context of the Greater Sunrise project. This project involves significant energy resources that require adequate protection.

The President emphasized that Timor-Leste's capacity to secure control over its Exclusive Economic Zone is insufficient. He stated that, given the size of the country and the challenges it faces, collaboration with Australia would be beneficial.

According to Ramos-Horta, Australia also faces similar maritime security issues, making the partnership even more relevant. He believes that by joining efforts, both countries can enhance the effectiveness of their patrol operations.

This call for a partnership was made in a broader context of regional security and economic development. The proposed collaboration encompasses not only cost-sharing but also the exchange of information and resources between the two countries.

Ramos-Horta's statements underline the importance of bilateral relations and Timor-Leste's commitment to working with international partners to ensure its sovereignty and security at sea.
