A laboratory technician in Siberia has died from plague, leading to a quarantine of nearly 200 people. The woman, reported to be 28 years old and working at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, succumbed to the illness shortly after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia symptoms.

The regional governor of Buryatia, Alexeij Zydenow, confirmed the death through an online statement, which noted that the incident may have occurred due to an accident involving a broken test tube containing plague bacteria. Local media outlets have reported similar details, indicating that the infection could have been contracted in the laboratory setting.

Reports suggest that a total of approximately 197 individuals are under medical observation following the technician's death. Many of these individuals had direct contact with the deceased. Specific measures to monitor health and safety have been implemented, and several hospitals in the area have been placed on quarantine as well.

As a precautionary measure, health authorities are actively monitoring those who may have been exposed to the bacteria. The quarantine efforts aim to mitigate any potential spread of the infection. According to various news accounts, initial interactions with authorities indicate that the situation is being managed.

While Russian officials deny a direct link between the technician's death and a larger bacterial outbreak, the U.S. government is closely monitoring the situation for potential health risks. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commented on the matter, reassuring the public that there is no immediate cause for alarm, although he emphasized the importance of monitoring events closely.

Experts continue to caution about the nature of plague, a serious bacterial infection, raising awareness about its symptoms and transmission methods. The ongoing investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the technician's infection and death, as well as ensure the health safety of those in the quarantine.
