Sébastien Lecornu defends unemployment policies despite recent rise
The minister stated that policies addressing unemployment are effective while acknowledging the recent increase in the unemployment rate in France.
In a statement on August 10, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu defended the results of the unemployment policies implemented over the past decade. He rejected any 'denial' regarding the recent rise in unemployment in France, while emphasizing the importance of not falling into a 'caricature' of the facts.
The unemployment rate indeed rose by 0.2 percentage points in the second quarter, reaching 8.3%. This represents the highest level observed since the fall of 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 crisis, and since the fall of 2019 previously, according to reports from Insee.
Lecornu thus called for a more nuanced analysis of the situation, asserting that the government remains committed to its goal of achieving full employment by 2027. He encouraged acknowledgment of the efforts made while confronting current challenges.
