The Department of State Services (SSS) plans to request the suspension of the cyberstalking trial against Omoyele Sowore. Director General Oluwatosin Ajayi has instructed the agency's counsel, Akintola Kehinde, to take steps for a temporary halt to the proceedings due to the increasing focus on the upcoming 2027 elections, according to the SSS media unit.

In a telephone interview, Kehinde explained that the agency's request for trial suspension is supported by various international conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory. This suggests that the SSS may see value in aligning the case's status with broader legal frameworks.

Sowore's lead counsel, Olumide Fusika, SAN, has made a separate appeal asking the DSS to withdraw the charges against his client. Fusika has also proposed that the case be referred to the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). This reflects another layer of legal maneuvering as the trial continues to unfold.

In contrast, Sowore himself has rejected the SSS's plan to suspend his trial. He is calling for the complete withdrawal of the charges against him, demanding an end to the proceedings and a public apology from the DSS.

The developments mark a significant moment in the ongoing legal battle involving Sowore, who is a presidential candidate from the African Action Congress (AAC). His case has drawn considerable attention given the political context leading up to the 2027 elections.

As both the SSS and Sowore’s legal team prepare to make their respective moves, the situation remains dynamic, with implications for the legal and political landscape in Nigeria.
